The undead pirates are enemies in Quest for Booty. They are space pirates on Merdegraw loyal to Captain Angstrom Darkwater, brought back from the dead due to the curse of Darkwater. Ratchet and Talwyn Apogee fought them on Merdegraw.

Their types included undead versions of the buccaneers, hardy buccaneers, as well as corsairs.

Two units unique to the undead pirates also appeared: Hot Heads and Skull Walkers.

History[]

Before Quest for Booty[]

Find the Mayor cutscene 5

The deceased bodies of Darkwater and his crew.

Captain Darkwater obtained the Fulcrum Star from the Zoni, a possession he considered priceless. To defend it, Darkwater placed a curse on himself using an ancient terachnoid incantation, and a coupon for one free curse at the Hoolefar Magic Emporium: he would bind his soul to his body to protect it, so that any who disturbed his remains would bring back him and his entire crew from the dead.[1]

When Darkwater's first mate, Romulus Slag, led a mutiny against the captain, any pirates who stayed loyal to Captain Darkwater were killed.[2] One such pirate was named "Fred", a pirate who used to pick on Slag's first mate, Rusty Pete, during annual holiday parties.[3] Darkwater himself was decapitated by Slag during this massacre at Morrow Caverns, and the deceased bodies of him and his crew were left there to rot.[2]

Quest for Booty[]

Find the body of Captain Darkwater cutscene

Rusty Pete attaching Slag's head to Angstrom's body.

Many years after his mutiny against Darkwater, Captain Slag had his own head removed by Ratchet, but it was retrieved by Pete. At Morrow Caverns, during "Find the body of Captain Darkwater", Pete brought Slag's head with him to Morrow Caverns when guiding Ratchet and Talwyn there under the pretense of helping them find the Fulcrum Star.[4] Instead, after Ratchet guided Pete to Darkwater's body, Pete attached Slag's head to Darkwater's body, triggering the curse to bring the crew back from the dead and bringing back Darkwater, whose body now head Slag's head. As such, the undead crew were led by Darkwater and Slag sharing the same body.[3]

The undead crew had the goal of invading the Zoni dimension and plundering it, a goal shared by both Slag and Darkwater.[5] In "Battle the Undead Pirates", the crew attacked Hoolefar Island, but were fended off by Ratchet, who damaged Darkwater's ship to the point where Darkwater retreated but vowed to return.[6] Ratchet then fought them again in "Recover the Fulcrum Star", where they and Sprocket's gang had combined forces for a joint attack on Hoolefar Island. Ratchet and Talwyn defeated Darkwater and Slag, severing the union between them,[7] and presumably eradicating the undead pirates.

Characteristics[]

Undead buccaneer

An undead buccaneer.

The undead pirates were a lot like their living counterparts, except that they resembled animated skeletons, and emitted a ghostly green light around them. They are also capable of appearing in battle as green wisps, or emerging from water. Areas of undead pirate presence were covered in a green spectral mist.

When the undead pirates attacked Hoolefar Island, their green mist poisoned almost all of the bay water (excluding the area leading to the undersea cave), hurting Ratchet if he ventured into it.

Combat[]

The buccaneer, hardy buccaneer, and corsair undead pirates are identical to their living counterparts in combat style, and capable of appearing from nowhere and fly in as green wisps or emerge from water, in addition to being deployed by pirate skiffs. The hot head pirates function as grenadiers, and Skull Walkers are akin to four-legged tanks with twin Gatling guns.

Sometimes upon defeat, undead pirates can drop 'pirate skulls'. Ratchet can pick up pirate skulls with his OmniWrench Millennium 12 and throw them as long-range attacks. They are used to destroy undead force fields that can only be deactivated by something marked by death,[5] and are the only thing that can deal damage to Captain Darkwater in his giant ghost form.

Behind the scenes[]

Prior to the appearance of undead pirates resulting from the curse of Darkwater, a similar undead space pirate enemy, the robotic pirate ghost, appeared in Up Your Arsenal.

Three undead pirates appeared as skins in the multiplayer of Full Frontal Assault, they are named Scurvy, Scallywag, and Gultch and are obtained as part of the Pirates Pack.
