Armor is a new type of collectible equipment, designed by Endako fashion experts[1], first featured in Going Commando. Upon progressing through the story and discovering Megacorp armor vendors, Ratchet can purchase armor sets by spending bolts. Each vendor is respectively found on planets Dobbo, Boldan, Snivelak, and Grelbin. In challenge mode, one is placed on Oozla to avoid limiting the player to any armor until reaching Dobbo. Each armor has its own distinct color style, and each superior version will add more armor panels, culminating in the Carbonox armor, which even fully covers Ratchet's head, ears, and tail.

Ratchet starts off with the free Commando-Matic body armor[2], also called the Commando suit, as it is standard issue for all Megacorp commandos. Each armor contains a built-in O2 Mask, and they also absorb nanomites dropped by defeated enemies and use them to upgrade Ratchet's maximum nanotech and his weapons.[2]

Purchasing the final piece of armor, the carbonox armor, in the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita releases of Going Commando unlocks the bronze trophy Yay Carbon.

Behind the scenes[]

Tetrafiber armor appeared as an alternate costume for Ratchet in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale under the name "commando suit".

The Hero difficulty level of Ratchet: Deadlocked describes all enemies as having been supplied with carbonox armor.[3]

Carbonox armor also was available as a pre-order bonus for Rift Apart in a graphically remastered version for both Ratchet and Rivet,[4] before appearing in the game.
