The Nefarious Troopers were the robotic minions of Dr. Nefarious during his campaign in the Polaris Galaxy to control the Great Clock.

History[]

A Crack in Time[]

Originally and primarily manufactured in the Tombli Outpost on planet Zanifar, they would become the Doctor's new soldiers, also serving under his allies; Lord Vorselon on his warship and Pollyx in his corporate HQ, respectively. The Tombli Outpost was later shut down by Ratchet, and the enslaved Fongoid workers set free.

They also patrolled space in saucers and kept tabs on the Phylax Sector, Vela Sector, Bernilius Sector and Corvus Sector with spy satellites that alerted their fleets of danger.

Upgraded elite variants of the Nefarious Troopers called the Chronoguard began to appear late in Nefarious' campaign, first being encountered by Ratchet when he arrived on Vorselon's Warship in order to save Alister Azimuth. They had a blue color scheme instead of red, and had stronger armor. The name 'Chrono' seemed to imply that the doctor would use them in his final occupation of the Great Clock.

Characteristics[]

Like most of Dr. Nefarious's creations (such as Klunk or the Hypersonic Brainwave Scrambler), they shared at least one quality with their creator; in this case, a visible cranium covered by green glass, referring to organic life forms as "squishies" and saying the word "annihilate" frequently.

The troopers are governed via a hive control that issues them all specific orders to undertake by Dr. Nefarious and his subordinates. In order to deviate from specific commands, the hive control must be rebooted.[1] Many of them however still generally possess free will in matters unrelated to their jobs, with some having individual names or making casual conversation with eachother. Most of them seem to have been repurposed from machines with previous menial functions such as drive-through menus.[2]

Units[]

Name Description
Microdrone Small swarmer drones that attack with electrical jolts from their metallic pincers. If three of them come together, they have the ability to merge into one of the four types of standard trooper.
Splitterbot Ground based troopers armed with twin buzz saw blades for melee attacks.
Protoguard Aerial based troopers armed with twin energy blasters.
Arc Striker Aerial based troopers armed with large claws capable of firing wide, electrical arcs along the ground.
Cyclobomber Ground based troopers armed with twin explosive, energy ball cannons. This attack launches through the air in an arc and explodes on impact.
Protomantis Heavily armored ground based troopers armed with twin gatling laser guns.
Nefarious Dropship Flying saucers used to deploy troopers and armed with twin missile launchers.

Behind the scenes[]

According to the Insomniac Museum, they were based on robots from science fiction B-movies. In concept art they were given the name of Nefarious Minions. There was a mini-game in the Insomniac Museum that allowed players to design their own pair of Agorian soldiers and pit them against up to 4 waves of Nefarious Troopers, starting out with standard units and ending with a Protomantis in the final round.
