- “ Blast your opponents into oblivion with high-velocity plasma balls! ”
- ―Weapon Description [ToD]
The Combuster (known as the Combustor in PAL regions) is a weapon manufactured by Grummel Net Industries in Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty, All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault. It is a blaster with a medium rate of fire that fires high-velocity fireballs of superheated plasma at enemies.
The Combustor can be upgraded to the Magma Combuster (or the Alpha Combuster in Full Frontal Assault) with use. In challenge mode, it can be upgraded to the Omega Magma Combuster.
Tools of Destruction
The Combuster was one of two weapons Ratchet possessed at the very beginning, the other being the Fusion Grenade. It could be modified with Raritanium, with upgrades longer range, faster shooting, more damage and more raritanium. Its special upgrade was the Pyrocidic Precipitation, which set the ground on fire when hit by a Combuster shot. With use, it could be upgraded to the Magma Combuster.
In challenge mode, it could be upgraded to the Omega Magma Combuster for 5,500,000 bolts.
Quest for Booty
The Combuster was available at the beginning, but lost in the Azorean Sea when Rusty Pete launched Ratchet and Talwyn to Hoolefar Island. Rusty Pete later returned the Combuster and Fusion Grenade to Ratchet after resurrecting Slag and Darkwater in the Morrow Caverns. It began at V3, and could still upgrade to the Magma Combuster.
The Pyrocidic Precipitation upgrade could be found in Morrow Caverns right before fighting a Pythor and rescuing Talwyn. Right before reaching the Pythor, Ratchet had to turn left and blow down the gate with a Fusion Grenade, knock down the wall of metal crates either with thewrench or another Fusion Grenade, and that would reveal the upgrade.
All 4 One
The Combuster returned as a stronger weapon, and functioned slightly differently. If Ratchet, Clank, Qwark and Nefarious fired their Combusters at the same target, it brought a powerful blow and the heroes were awarded a damage bonus. It could not be upgraded with use, but its ammo could be upgraded for 5,000 bolts, its power could be upgraded for 10,000 bolts, and it could receive an Elite upgrade for 30,000 bolts.
Full Frontal Assault
The Combuster could be obtained by collecting it from weapon pods. With use, it could upgrade to the Alpha Combuster at level 3, which functioned similarly to the Magma Combuster but remained as a pistol rather than becoming a larger rifle.
The Combuster is a small, yellow and black pistol with a red node behind it. It fires flaming balls of plasma at enemies. The Magma Combuster is a larger, bulkier carbine with three different barrels identical to the basic Combuster, and his held by Ratchet with a left-hand grip and trigger. The Alpha Combuster, however, is simply a pistol with three barrels.
In All 4 One and Full Frontaul Assault, the red node on the back of the gun turned from red to green.
The Combuster is an all-purpose weapon which is initially useful against most targets. Its rate of fire is lower than previous pistols, but it can be effective in dealing damage early on. However, as an early weapon, it also becomes greatly outclassed by other weapons. In Tools of Destruction, for instance, its damage is practically obsolete by the time the player reaches Ardolis. At this point, the Combuster transitions from an all-purpose weapon to primarily a weapon used to fight large mobs of smaller enemies (though even in this respect, it is outclassed).
The Combuster can be modified with Raritanium in Tools of Destruction, improving its damage, range, rate of fire and raritanium earned. The player may wish to prioritize the rate of fire, as it is initially low, though all its upgrades are useful. The Pyrocidic Precipitation upgrade, along with the upgrade to the Magma Combuster, allow the weapon to spread its damage to more targets and be better at dealing with mobs, transitioning the weapon from an all-purpose weapon to having a more specific function.
Behind the scenes
In early demos of All 4 One, a different weapon known as the "blaster" initially took the Combuster's place.
In All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault, it uses the same icon as the Constructo Pistol.
