The IRIS Supercomputer is an ancient supercomputer in Tools of Destruction, mentioned in Quest for Booty and A Crack in Time. It is the largest and most powerful computer in the Polaris Galaxy, that once served as the search engine for the universe. Its origins are entirely unknown. The computer is located on the Kreeli Comet.

Ratchet and Clank came to the IRIS Supercomputer in search of information about the Dimensionator. When they came, the space pirates had sealed it away from the public.

History[]

Before Tools of Destruction[]

IRIS was built eons prior to Tools of Destruction by an unknown race,[1][2] with help from the terachnoids.[3] It was constructed using an advanced PK-73 sisterboard, which was equipped with a raritanium vector shell, just like the one utilized in the computer of the Great Clock.[4]

Space pirates captured the IRIS Supercomputer, looting precious metals from its circuitry,[5] as well as copper wiring, dry ice for the thermaflux tanks, and few ion modulators.[6] damaging its central processing unit.[7] Captain Slag restricted the computer's use to educational purposes, warning his crew about using it to download games, music, and alternative cinema without his approval.[8]

The Polaris Compendium of Historical Importantness had an episode about the IRIS Supercomputer, after it had been taken over by space pirates and sealed within pirate territory.[1]

Tools of Destruction[]

Captain Qwark found an Infobot with The Polaris Compendium of Historical Importantness episode on IRIS in Emperor Tachyon's underwear drawer, giving it to Ratchet and Clank.[9]

In "Infiltrate the Pirate Camp", Ratchet and Clank snuck into the pirate camp surrounding the computer. After "The Battle for the IRIS", the two found it broken, prompting Clank to look into repairing its CPU.[7] In "Repair the IRIS", Clank, commanding the Zoni, repaired the computer.

IRIS reactivated, displaying a number of videos of Dr. Nefarious, Chairman Drek, Clank's birth on Quartu, and Courtney Gears' music video. It told Ratchet about the Dimensionator's nature, current whereabouts after Max Apogee moved it to Kerchu City, Jasindu, and Tachyon's history. However, due to its power cells functioning only at eight percent capacity, it shut down before it could tell Ratchet about the location of the lombaxes.[10] When Ratchet asked it this later, it told him that its memory on the subject was deleted, but could answer a large number of other questions.[11]

After Tools of Destruction[]

After Clank was taken by the Zoni, Ratchet returned to IRIS with Talwyn Apogee. IRIS told Ratchet about Angstrom Darkwater, a space pirate captain who had communicated with the Zoni.[12]

Characteristics[]

The Awesomeness of IRIS 1

IRIS has immense computational power. It is built with an advanced PK-73 sisterboard made with a raritanium vector shell, of which the only other one in existence was used in the Great Clock.[4] This gave IRIS an IQ of 3 billion, which is likened to "170 terachnoid sages, or three billion holonet fanboys".[1] Its computational power and immense storage meant it was used both as a form of intergalactic encyclopaedia and oracle, with some believing its power gave it an ability to predict future events.[2]

Gameplay[]

After IRIS is repaired, the player can speak to IRIS at any point to ask IRIS a number of questions. IRIS gaves answers about Ratchet & Clank series lore (including games prior to Tools of Destruction), as well as answering a few nonsense questions.
