Dallas on DreadZone., DL

Dallas Wanamaker[1][2] is a character in Deadlocked. He is an anchorman for DreadZone, Vox News, The 'Zone, Galactic Glamour, and Supreme Machines, all of which were holovision shows broadcast by the Vox Network. He was the main commentator for DreadZone alongside his co-host Juanita Alvaro. Dallas was largely unprofessional, and would diverge from the script, lose his composure, flirt with Juanita, fall asleep on air, or ask inane questions (such as what was in the "Special Sauce").

History

Pre-Deadlocked

Dallas was at some point offered a job at Annihilation Nation, which he declined. He later regretted this decision, citing their "great dental plan". He had also had plans of entering ballet. Dallas was also married at some point in his life, though the two divorced. Dallas joined the Vox Network as the anchorman for Vox News, DreadZone, The 'Zone, Galactic Glamour and Supreme Machines, all of which he hosted alongside Juanita (aside from Supreme Machines). He was still living in his mother's house during this time.[3]

Prior to Ratchet's involvement in DreadZone, Dallas commentated on several stories with Juanita, often frustrating her by veering off-script and appearing not to believe in the stories he was reading. He detailed slanderous stories about Ratchet and his allies, while also teasing Ratchet's involvement by claiming that DreadZone would soon have a new contestant "whose name rhymes with Splatchet". Juanita also poisoned Dallas' coffee, causing him to thud on air, though he later survived. He also detailed the performance of Captain Starshield, just prior to Starshield's final battle with Ace Hardlight on Catacrom Four.[3]

Dallas covered the big dual between Captain Starshield and Ace Hardlight on a pod, in which Starshield killed three DZ Strikers before Ace Hardlight killed him from behind. The duel took place just prior to Ratchet's kidnapping and subsequent fored participation in DreadZone.

Later, Dallas covered other matches on the DreadZone Station in the Battledome with Juanita, including a showdown between Mobius Man and the Eviscerator, before covering Ratchet's first match with his combat bot allies, Merc and Green. Despite having covered news stories on Ratchet, he claimed to have never heard of him, and speculated that he would be "intermission material" and "would not last two rounds". To his surprise, Ratchet survived, allowing him to complete the Marauder Tournament and travel to Catacrom Four.

Following this, Dallas commentated on Ratchet's performance along with Juanita throughout, and also covered several slanderous news stories about him, linking him to alleged mafia groups, organized crime, and accusing him of crashing a tanker ship and selling cigarettes to children among other things.

Juanita and Dallas

When Gleeman Vox threatened to destroy the DreadZone Station, Dallas commentated on the "final episode of DreadZone", and broke down into tears live on air. He began to root for Ratchet, expressing fears that he would not survive, and making confessions to Juanita. He also made confessions about committing cruel pranks on people he knew, including placing a tyhrranoid in the locker of a friend named Susie Beakleton, and accidentally killing a friend named Timmy Aberdeen by setting fire to his backpack as part of a prank. He also claimed that he had wagered 500 bolts on Ratchet defeating Vox, which infuriated Juanita that he would gamble with their lives. This prompted him to lash out in anger at her, as she had never cared before.

When Ratchet defeated Vox, Dallas managed to escape in an escape shuttle carrying Clank, Big Al, Venus, Vernon, Eugene, and the two Test-Bots, which picked up him and Juanita, before picking up Ratchet, Merc, Green, and Slugga before the station exploded. Dallas began a new reality Holo-Vision show, Dallas and Juanita, in which he "blissfully" married Juanita for Holo-Vision ratings. Though the marriage was supposed to have been faked, Dallas switched the justice of the peace actor with an actual justice of the peace. Juanita was unaware of this throughout her life. Nonetheless, she tried to kill him several times with a variety of booby traps and weapons; in one such episode, it consisted of bear traps, an anvil, a bomb and The Harbinger.

Characteristics

Appearance

File:Dallas full.png

Dallas Wanamaker is a member of an unnamed green sapient species. He is tall and slender, surpassing Juanita in height, and has green skin black colorations of green located on parts of his body. He also has three fingers. Dallas has two antennae on his head, elf-like ears, a nose full of ridges, and brown hair (which Juanita first claimed was a wig, and later speculated was a hair plug, but Dallas insisted was real). Dallas' typical attire is a blue suit with a white shirt underneath, accompanied by a red tie, and black shoes. He is also known to wear pink-frilly underpants.

Personality

I think explosions are pretty!

a musing from Dallas Wanamaker., DL

Dallas is a more eccentric host than Juanita, and very unprofessional. Like Juanita, he enjoyed the violence of DreadZone and found it amusing (for instance, jokingly comparing the splattering of contestants' blood into the stands of one Battledome challenge to that of visitors getting sprayed by water at Aqua World). However, he was less bloodthirsty and sadistic than Juanita, and sometimes showed signs of being disgusted at the violence, asking children not to watch.

Dallas would often tell big lies on air, such as linking Ratchet to organized crime and referring to Gleeman Vox as an "altruistic philanthropist". He was also very unprofessional, and would very frequently go off-script or overdo his attempts to cover up DreadZone stories.[3] He also flirted with Juanita frequently and made sexist advances towards her, much to her frustration.

Dallas Wanamaker was voiced by Daran Norris, who also voiced the Narrator.

Unused audio

According to one unused audio file, Dallas left messages for Hydro Girl, but she never returned his calls. Later on when Hydro Girl was freezing to death in the Meteor Temple of Shaar as part of a DreadZone course, Dallas remarks that she probably wished she had returned his phone calls in light of her current situation. He also remarked that he had stolen her X-Ray Sunshades.[4]

In other unused audio files, it was mentioned that Dallas once threw a "Dallas Loves Everything Charity Event", with Shellshock being hired to be the door greeter. Shellshock apparently beat up those who left the charity depending on how much they had donated, being softer on those who had donated more.[5]

Non-canonical appearances

Dallas Wanamaker in Ratchet & Clank Manga: Volume 2.

In Ratchet & Clank Manga: Volume 2, Dallas appears as anchorman for DreadZone alongside Juanita. His appearance is very similar to his Deadlocked appearance, and the only noticeable difference between the two is their smaller antenna sizes in the manga.

Re-imagined appearance

Re-imagined appearance.

Dallas has a sizeable role in the reboot movie and a small role in the reboot game. He appears as a news anchor and provides news updates throughout, updating the galaxy on President Phyronix statement and briefly asking a question to Captain Template:R. His appearance is near identical, though he lacks the hair he had in his original appearance, and his eyes have brown pupils rather than blue. While he appears to work with Juanita, the two do not appear in segments together.
