Cobalia is a planet in Tools of Destruction. Located in the Cerullean Sector of the Polaris Galaxy, it is the gelatonium capital of the galaxy. The planet is home to a large gelatonium plant adjacent to the Cobalia spaceport. Outside the spaceport, the planet is a swamp world with dangerous wildlife, including Basilisk leviathans.

Ratchet and Clank crashed on Cobalia upon their first arrival in Polaris. After reaching the gelatonium plant, the two encountered the Smuggler, who helped them leave the planet.

History[]

Before Tools of Destruction[]

GrummelNet Industries's famous Confuzzler Gas was derived from the seeds of the Cobalian werm plant.[1]

Three years prior to the events of Tools of Destruction, Emperor Tachyon took over the planet. Thereafter, the Polaris Galaxy became dependent on Tachyon's rationing of gelatonium fuel for all interstellar travel.[2]

In Tools of Destruction, Ratchet and Clank crashed on Cobalia after fleeing Tachyon's attack on Metropolis. With Ratchet's presence detected, Tachyon shut down the gelatonium plant, preventing any ship from refueling until its pumps were back online,[3] while the loudspeakers at the spaceport spread anti-lombax propaganda.[4] In "Explore Cobalia", Ratchet and Clank fought their way through the swamps, defeating a leviathan on the way, before reaching the spaceport.

While exploring the spaceport, Ratchet and Clank encountered the Smuggler, who had landed on Cobalia seeking gel after running out during a job. Though his parrot wanted to kill the two of them, the Smuggler offered them a ride off Cobalia if they could reactivate the gelatonium plant, giving them a Gelanator to do so.[5] In "Restore the Gelatonium Pumps", the two reactivated the pumps, receiving frequent loudspeaker warnings against doing so on the way.[6] The Smuggler then agreed to take them to Stratus City on planet Kortog.

After Tools of Destruction[]

During A Crack in Time, after Dr. Nefarious' damage to the Great Clock, violent outbursts were reported on space radio to be surfacing on Cobalia among other planets in the galaxy.[7]

Cobalia was one of the planets stolen by the Markazian planet-thief Artemis Zogg, and was later returned to its original orbit following his defeat.[8] Ratchet and Clank later encountered the octomoths, native to Cobalia, in All 4 One.

Geography[]

Cobalia from space appears to be largely covered in oceans with small continents and several long and narrow landmasses. The planet itself is known as the gel capital of the Polaris Galaxy[6] due to being the galaxy's richest source of the fuel.[2]

The main known point of interest of the planet is the gelatonium plant, itself adjacent to the Cobalia spaceport. The spaceport comprises several bridges connecting landing platforms built on towers within swamp water. Around the spaceport are consumer bots transporting goods in and out of the plant. Near the spaceport is a cave home to leviathans.

Inside, the gelatonium plant is filled with liquid gelatonium rivers and waterfalls. The liquid gelatonium is transported to large pumps used by the facility to produce the fuel. The plant is inhabited by tumfoids that dispose of and consume gelatonium cubes to prevent workers from bouncing on them.

Outside the spaceport, Cobalia's swamp comprises several rocky islands across vast swamp water. The swamp is home to exotic flora (including the Cobalia werm plant whose seeds produce a psychotropic hallucinogen[1]) and a harsh wildlife (inculding Cerullean swarmers, Cerullean centipedes, Basilisk leviathans, flying pterodactyls, and octomoths). A few abandoned facilities are seen between the islands.

Behind the scenes[]

The areas where pterodactyls fly around Cobalia were implemented by the QA support team at Insomniac Games. Due to the diverse specializations of many QA testers, they were able to contribute to other departments by performing specific tasks. However, this arrangement ultimately resulted in testers being assigned to their own departments to assist with these special tasks, as their involvement was detracting from the primary focus of game testing.[9]
